56 service Stevenage Letchworth Hitchin

From September 2026 the current Arriva 55 service between Letchworth Grange Estate and Stevenage will reduce from half hourly to hourly to combine with a hourly service no 56 following the same route as far as Letchworth but then continuing on to Hitchin. See August 2026 – Intalink for details of this and other September changes.
This reduces the service to the Grange but continues the half-hourly link between Letchworth and Stevenage while also providing a useful link between Stevenage, Lister Hospital, Jackmans Estate, and Hitchin without the annoying change in Letchworth. Should be a big improvement!

Stevenage SB1 and SB12 service

An interesting article from Bus and Train User about the SB1 and new SB12 service to Chells, Stevenage

”As well as in Southend-on-Sea (and also Preston – which I’ve yet to visit) it all kicked off in Stevenage last week where Stagecoach is flexing its muscles against Arriva. It doesn’t seem that long ago (February 2024), Stagecoach extended its Bedford to Hitchin routes 9A and 9B onwards to Stevenage bringing its buses into the 1960s New Town for the first time by competing against Arriva’s routes 100/101 which link Luton and Hitchin with Stevenage with connections between the latter two towns going right back to London Transport Country Bus days.”

News from South Herts

From Paul – South Herts.
The following services have seen increasing usage in the county:
331, 142, 107, 292, 313, 327, 491. Interestingly 3-4 of these are now electric.

Whilst other services have declined:
258, 298, 317, 279 and 217. Only one of these is electric.

The 11 TFL routes in south Herts account for 45,179,625 passengers!

Herts county as a whole bus use increased year on year 11% to 23,300,000. This is expected to increase further with Flightline and new sponsored services this year. TFL bus usage has declined 18% due to ultra low traffic speeds.
